Corrective Behavior and Positive Reinforcement

When you have a dog that misbehaves one of the hardest things to decide and figure out is how to properly "punish" them for their behavior.  The main problem people run into while trying to correct their dogs behavior is they attempt punishment after the fact.  They come home to find the dog has chewed up something that lays in ruin around the house and then proceed to impart their punishment.  The problem is that the dog doesn't know what it did to be punished.  It will assume that whatever it is currently doing is what has made you upset.

The hardest and most important part of correcting your dogs behavior is catching them in the act of what they are doing wrong.  Once you have caught them in the act, hitting is not the appropriate response.  All that a dog usually

needs is a firm "NO!" to stop negative behavior.  If they respond, reward them for obeying your command but not too soon.  Should they not obey physically stop them from what they are doing and make them sit.

Although they may make you mad with whatever they are doing you do not want them to think that they are what you disagree with, just their behavior.  This is why you should reward them a while after they have obeyed your command to stop.  Do not go so far as to reward them with a treat, but tell them they are good and pet them for a while to encourage their response to your commands.  Follow a consistent pattern of positive reinforcement to acheive the best results.

One of the best traits of the Goldendoodle is their ability to learn and follow commands.  Dawgy Doodles is proud to provide you with the best that this breed has to offer.
