Puppy Potty Training

All of our puppies are micro-chipped and come with a lifetime genetic health guarantee

When you get a new puppy, house training them can be a very frustrating task. It is important to remember however, that to successfully house train your new puppy it may take several months, and even full grown dogs can have an accident from time to time.  There are a few steps you can take that will help your puppy become housebroken faster.  This starts with keeping a daily routine.  If you maintain a solid routine your puppy will become accustomed to it and be less likely to have accidents.

Make sure to keep an eye on your puppy for signs that it needs to go outside. When they need to go out, they tend to sniff around excessively, pace around, and circle the same area.  If you notice any of these symptoms it is a good idea to take them outside.  When taking them outside, train them to associate a word with your going out - "outside" or "potty" are pretty popular ones.

Should your puppy have an accident avoid negative reinforcement techniques such as rubbing their nose in it. Negative reinforcement techniques can lead to more negative behavior in the future.  Instead, try to catch them in the middle of it.  Say "NO" then escort them outside to finish, using your outside word, once you are outdoors.

Another method involves using pads or newspapers.  Once they recognize these are the only places they can "go", transfer them outside as well.  Then you gradually decrease the size of the pad or news-papered area until they are simply going where they are supposed to.

Patience is key as your puppy won't even have bladder control during the first 12 weeks of its life.  The most important times to take them out will be after you wake up, after they eat, and just before bed time.  Remember you can't simply buy a puppy, because they are cute.  Dogs and pets are companions that need help learning and a certain measure of life-long care to be happy, healthy and productive family members.  Dawgy Doodles of course as a recognized Goldendoodle breeder recommends the family and allergy-friendly Goldendoodle.
